Subhajit Makhal: As technology and modern scientific methods are rolling into our lives faster than a roller- coaster our lives are changing both mentally and physically. We to cope with the rapid expansion of modernity are bringing certain dietary changes such as eating fast foods, drinking too much caffeine etc. This is causing inflammation in our body. Body inflammation happens when white chemicals from your body’s white blood cells enter your blood or tissues to protect your body from invaders. This raises the blood flow to the area of injury or infection. It can cause redness and warmth. Although inflammation is not bad but ‘Chronic’ inflammation may cause diabetes, obesity and heart disease. Now there are certain foods that increase inflammation in our bodies.

We need to avoid these foods :-
1) Refined sugar :- Also known as “white poison”.We eat refined sugar in almost every food such as tea, sweets, desserts and packaged foods. When we eat white sugar it activiate a process in our body known as glycation. Glycation occurs when sugar molecules bind with protein or fats and creates AGE’s. When AGE’s deposits too much into our body it increases inflammation. The best way is to avoid white sugar and replace it with brown sugar or jaggery.
2) Deep oil-fried foods:- We all eat this almost everyday. Deep oil-fried snacks such as samosas, Fry’s, chops, chips, fast foods etc . Many people to avoid eating outside cook food that are deep in oil at home, believing it to be healthy. Well it’s not ,deep oil fried foods cooked at high temperature whether at home or outside is dangerous. It increases body fat (saturated)to a great level which causes the body to respond with inflammation. Fried foods when taken causes cytokine production which is very harmful for body. Switch to less fried foods.

3) Refined carbohydrates:- We bengalis mostly consume maida as refined carbohydrates although white rice also falls under this category. But white rice is not that bad while maida is. Maida or refined carbohydrate spikes insulin, elevates cholesterol, increase chance of type 2 diabetes which I’m total increase body inflammation.We eat maida in white breads, parathas, luchis, certain pizzas, pastas, burgers and many more. Maida has calories but zero nutrition. Refined carbohydrates causes great damage to internal organs. Switch to whole wheat (atta), millets, bajra, chickpeas flour etc. These are very good for health and nutritious.
4) Omega 6 fatty acids :- Omega 6 fatty acids plays a vital role in normal growth and development of a human being. It is important to maintain a healthy balance of omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids. Excess intake of omega 6 fatty acids can stimulate the body to generate pro-inflammatory chemicals.Omega 6 fatty acids are commonly found in vegetable oils including soyabean oil, corn, sunflower etc. To balance Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio eat Omega 3 rich foods such as sea fishes and sea animals and vegetarians can take flax seeds, walnuts etc.
Overall inflammation is good for human body in limitation but chronic inflammation is dangerous in long run as it can cause cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and depression…
