Subhajit Makhal: Toothbrush a oral hygiene equipment used by everyone all across the globe. But do you know the history and origin of toothbrush??? Ever anyone of us wondered while brushing teeth early morning how ancient people used to brush!. Few of us would say that ancient Indians used twigs of Neem Tree for brushing which is very true as Neem itself is a great herb which helped to clean and disinfect whole mouth. Do you know apart from India tree twigs, birds feathers, animal bones and even porcupine quills were used by people to clean their teeth, we’re recovered through exacavations all across the globe.

Different cultures used to brush with different methods. Ancient Greeks and Romans used toothpicks to clean their teeth. Africans used certain twigs of certain plants. Even many African tribes use twigs nowadays. Miswaks have been used by muslims since the 7th century. In 1223, Japanese Zen master Dōgen Kigen recorded that he saw monks in China clean their teeth with brushes made of horsetail hairs attached to an oxbone handle. The first toothbrush resembling like the modern toothbrush we use today was found in China. People of Tang Dynasty (619-907 AD) used to brush their teeth with hog bristles. ( Hogs are domesticated pigs ) . These bristles were brought from living in colder regions of Siberia. Europeans during their medieval expeditions got knowledge of hog bristles toothbrush in China. Since then Europeans began to import hog bristles from China. But Europeans found that hog bristles were too hard on teeth and gum. Europeans asked the Chinese to replace hog bristles with horse bristles because horse bristles were soft compared to hog bristles. From then onwards mass productions of toothbrushes were ordered from China to Britain. William Addis of United Kingdom is believed to have produced the first mass-produced toothbrush in 1780.In 1770, he had been jailed for causing a riot. While in prison he decided that using a rag with soot and salt on the teeth was ineffective and could be improved.

After saving a small bone from a meal, he drilled small holes into the bone and tied into the bone tufts of bristles that he had obtained from one of the guards, passed the tufts of bristle through the holes in the bone and sealed the holes with glue. Later an improved design had a bone handle with holes bored into it for the Siberian boar hair bristles. Unfortunately, animal bristle was not an ideal material as it retained bacteria, did not dry efficiently and the bristles often fell out. In addition to bone, handles were made of wood or ivory. During the 1900s, celluloid gradually replaced bone handles. The first nylon bristle toothbrush made with nylon yarn went on sale in 1938. Gradually as time Toothbrush became an important part of all households. What we brush with today came through various modifications…..
