Subhajit Makhal: Have you ever heard about the Chillingham Castle. Chiilingham castle’s stories are as chilly as it’s name. Probably had read somewhere?? Maybe Yes, Maybe No ?? . Chillingham castle is a medieval castle located in the village of Chillingham, Northern England. It is believed to be one of the most haunted places not only in Britain but all Europe. Let us learn about the brief history of the castle. Chillingham castle was built as a monastery in the late 12th century but later converted into a castle which kept switching hands. The castle became a strategic point and location in the medieval ages when England and Scotland battled each other. King Edward 1 stayed at the castle while on his way to a battle against the legendary William Wallace of Scotland. The castle was a post for England to advance English armies into Scottish armies attacked multiple times and took control of the castle.
Anne of Denmark, who was also Queen of Scotland stayed in the castle. James 1 of England who brought England and Scotland under one roof also stayed there. Therefore the castle housed royals of that age. The castle had a torture chamber where hundreds of people like captured soldiers, spies and ordinary people gave their life. There are executioner’s block in Chillingham Castle. All sorts of tortorus devices like thumb screws, chains, leg irons, cages, man traps and branding irons etc. There are executioner’s and the serene face of the Iron Maiden supported by a horrible, hinged and spiked casing to hold a live body. Several ghosts are said to reside inside the Chillingham castle. The most famous was the Blue Boy Ghost also known as The Radiant Boy. The castle has a pink bedroom where the blue boy’s ghost believed to haunt. His pitful cries could be heard at midnight and he would appear as a halo of blue light .
The glowing figure then manifest itself as a little boy dressed in blue. People believe that radiant boy’s ghost to be a boy who was killed there. Bones of a boy had been discovered walled up in the castle. Even mouldered blue fabrics have been found. The bones were reburied with proper Christian ceremony. After which ghost of the Blue Boy was no longer seen. Another ghost which is quite famous also haunts the castle. This time it is a lady. The famous ghost of Lady Mary Berkeley who probably died in 1719. She was the wife of Lord Grey of Wark and Chillingham village. Lady Mary Berkeley was abondoned by her husband who ran off with her sister named Herietta. Lady Mary Berkely was heart broken as she was left all alone with her only baby. She alone wandered the halls of castle longing for her husband to return.
She died with sadness and grief and was buried just beyond the castle in the tiny medieval church of St Peter’s in the village of Chillingham. Visitors of Chillingham castle have reported painful wailing of Lady Berkeley. Another Lady dressed in white who suddenly appears begging for a drink of water and then vanishes suddenly in mid-air. It is believed that she is victim of poisoning. Another disputed haunting that is believed to be existing is of John Sage Or John Dragfoot. It is thought that John Sage was a depressed, sadistic ex-soldier who turned into a torturer.
The take of John Sage is very gruesome Apart from these ghosts who haunts Chillingham Castle there are voices in the chapel, phantom monks on the Devil’s walk as this was a monastery before castle. There is also a story of a witch who both cursed and protects Chillingham Castle. Finally Chillingham Castle is pre-medieval 800 year old castle where kings resided, bloody torture chambers tore human flesh and blood and also be used as a bunker for world War 2.As of current news the castle are open to public for late night ghost tours and castle’s outbuildings are available for holiday rentals.
