Subhajit Makhal: We humans since the beginning had bottle filled curiosity regarding pre-historic creatures be it on land or the uttermost depth of oceans. Scientists around the globe are discovering various pre-historic fossils of extinct animals every other day. Various pre-historic creatures existing since the period of dinosaurs still lurks among us on land, seas and deep ocean. One such animal is the “Frilled Shark”. Frilled Shark is also known as Lizard Shark. This specific shark species were first scientifically described by a German ichthyologist Ludwig H.P. Doderlein. The scientific name of Frilled Shark is Chlamydose Lachus Anguineus. There are only two species of Frilled Sharks dristributed throughout regions of the Atlantic Ocean and The Pacific Ocean. The two sepcies are :- 1) The Frilled Shark 2) The Southern African Shark. Frilled Sharks have a unique and extraordinary features. Features of the shark :- The head of the Frilled Shark is broad and flat. The jaws of Frilled Sharks contain 300 trident shaped teeth. The rows of teeth are widely spread. The upper jaw of Frilled shark has 19-28 tooth rows and 21-29 tooth rows in lower jaws.Most frilled sharks are somewhere between 4 – 5 feet.
However, males have been recorded at lengths up to 5.6 feet, and females have clocked in at 6.6 feet. Frilled Sharks are able to open jaws and devour food sources that are greater than their size.
Diet of Frilled Shark :- The Frilled shark mainly feed on smaller sharks, bony fishes and various types of squids. They lives on ocean floors hence also feed on flesh of dead fishes and other aquatic animals floating down to the bottom of ocean from the surface of the oceans. The Frilled Sharks have such long jaws it’s thought they can eat prey upto half size their own body length. These sharks don’t have strong bites compared to other jaws. Swimming ability of Frilled shark:- Frilled Sharks have a unique ability. Frilled Sharks are naturally buoyant because they have large livers that are filled with low-density lipids. Actually frilled sharks aren’t known for being great swimmers. They move slowly and their bodies curl and coil like snakes.
Unique ability of Frilled Shark :- Frilled sharks have one of the longest gestation periods in the entire animal kingdom. They can be pregnant for up to 3.5 years! Their eggs stay inside of them the entire time until they’re ready to hatch.Frilled sharks have between 2 – 15 live babies.It isn’t known how many eggs and embryos might be developed and lost before that.
Are Frilled Sharks dangerous to us ??? Whenever we hear shark we imagine shark chasing us to bite chunks off flesh from our body. Indeed few species of Sharks does this, All humans are not bad this rule implement on sharks as all sharks are not bad. But Frilled Sharks does not pose any threat to humans as they live very deep inside the Ocean.
Is Frilled Shark endangered :- New Zealand conservation groups considered them “at risk,” and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) had them listed as “near threatened” because of their slow reproductive rates.
Scientists does not have relevant much information regarding Frilled Sharks as studies have been conducted on Frilled Sharks caught on fishing nets or dead ones. More studies need to be done on this dinosaur era creature. Till then let’s remain in mystery….
