Subhajit Makhal: have a little spider And i am very fond of him. He climbs onto my shoulder And then upto my chin’. Yes, since childhood have read and memorized many poems related to spiders. Spiders are one of the most fascinating species on our planet. This eight legged creature is not loved by most people around the world. Most people don’t like spiders due to their appearance and looks. From kids to adults know that spiders live on land. But do you know that spiders also live under oceans and seas. No I am not talking about average house spider or tarantula but certain species of spiders live under oceans. The scientific name of Sea spider is Pycnogonida.Sea spiders live under oceans throughout the globe including the cold water bodies of North and South Poles. There are almost 1300-1500 species of sea spiders. Sea spiders live as deep as 23,000 feet under water.

These spiders are so tough and enduring that scientists believe these spiders had been living in our planets since 500 million years. They have no spine. Many people will think alright , but how can they breathe underwater. Sea spiders don’t have lungs . Yes it’s true ! They breathe oxygen through their legs which is then transported throughout their body. Sea spiders have four pair of legs. The size of sea spiders depends. Those sea spiders that live in the warmer part of the ocean are so small that they are almost invisible to human eye while sea spiders that lives in colder parts of the ocean are big in size as almost 20 inches. The world’s largest species of sea spider is the giant sea spider Colossendeis colossea, which has only a tiny body but a leg-span of up to 70 cm and amazing fact is that this sea spider species hold Guinness World Book of Records. How sea spiders hunt? We all know that land spiders that live on land spin webs to catch prey and few species of spiders move out to hunt prey. But sea spiders does not spin webs but when they get hold of a prey they use their proboscis which is like a tube used to suck fluids out of the prey.

Sea spiders don’t have teeth and fangs like land spiders. But few species of sea spider may have small teeths inside their proboscis. Sea spiders eat small animals found in the ocean such as jellyfish, sponges, worms, soft corals etc. However there are animals like octopuses, rays, crabs and fishes that eat Sea spiders. Basically Sea spiders not only hunts but also gets hunted. Are Sea Spiders dangerous or harmful to humans like certain species of land spiders? The answer is no. Sea spiders are harmless because they do not have fangs to inject venom neither they have fur on their body. The male and female sea spiders mate through pores in their legs. Female Sea spider releases eggs. The male Sea spider carry the eggs in his organ until the eggs hatch.
Overall Sea Spiders is unique underwater creature however does not receive much importance as they are not economically important for humans.. .
