Renowned architect Dulal Mukherjee recently launched his book “Bridging Lines and Roots” at The Bengal Club amidst much fanfare. The recipient of many prestigious national awards including the Baburao Mhatre Gold medal from IIA for his lifetime contribution to Architecture in 2010, Mukherjee’s career has spanned from 1968 and continues to be fertile till today. Mukherjee has played a significant role in shaping the metamorphosing architectural face of Eastern India and beyond and the book exhibits his devoted study of vernacular architecture and contextual design. Published by THE NEPTUNE GLITZ, the introduction to “Bridging Lines and Roots” has been penned by Subhro Saha. The book will be available on Amazon.in.
Architect Gita Balakrishnan the founder of Ethos said in her opening speech, “It’s a really special day. It’s in the root, not the branches, where the greatest strength lies because roots help in anchoring the tree. Humans are no different. As I flipped through the pages of “Bridging Lines and Roots” I found that every line and sketch drawn on the pages are describing Dulal da’s journey. My first interaction with him goes back to 2004 and I felt quite at ease communicating with him since the starting itself. This is a proud moment for me.”
The book was launched by award winning film director Goutam Ghose in the presence of other dignitaries. Praising Mukherjee, Ghose said, “Now I have the book in print, it’s kind of a memoir of an architect full of sketches, illustrations and site plans. It’s a wonderful book reflecting the journey of Dulal Da. I remember the opening day of Biswa Bangla Convention Centre. I entered and I was awestruck. The first question that came to my mind was who has done it and I immediately knew it must be Dulal da. His range of work from that huge convention centre to Shantiniketan’s mud house is so wide and interesting. Dulal Da creates symphony in space.”
The Chairman of The Ambuja Neotia group, Harshavardhan Neotia said, “Congratulations, Dulal da for launching this beautiful book. I am sure that the book will be a textbook for young architects. They will see the passion, the hard work he has put in and the wonderful hand sketches he has combined to give a phenomenal experience for the readers.” Then he went on to share some of his personal experiences with Mukherjee of how he had interviewed him when Mr. Neotia was a rookie journalist in the early stages of his career for a lifestyle magazine, adding a lot of humour.
The chairman of Merlin Group of Companies, Mr. Sushil Mohta said, “My association with Dulal da goes back 35 years. Dada is not only a great architect but he is also a great human being. I remember one incident when I had asked him to redo a certain project. He did it but did not bother about the commercial aspect at all. After the project was completed I asked him, “Dada you have not sent any bill” and he said, “Thik Ache Ja Khushi Tomar Diye Dao.” That is his freewheeling and creative spirit. I am really privileged and lucky that I am one of his friends and clients.”
Also present at the event were Mr. Debashish Sen, Managing Director of HIDCO, Mr. Ambarish Dasgupta, senior partner at Intueri Consulting, Mrs. Mamata Shankar, Actress and Dancer, Mr. Jayanta Mitra, Ex- West Bengal Advocate General, Mr. G.M.Kapur, State Convenor of INTACH West Bengal Chapter and others.
